The integral role of R&D
QMAG has always placed great importance on research and development. As our operations started in the 1980s, initial R&D included testing of the mine site and materials to determine the extent of the Kunwarara deposit. We then focused on developing processes to transform raw magnesite into quality magnesia products. Over the decades, our focus has progressed to significant research into how our product range could be broadened to include more than just electrofused and deadburned magnesia. The resulting improvements in product processing and mining yield played a vital role in company growth.
Current R&D work at QMAG is focused on building a secure, globally competitive supply chain for refractory products while maintaining existing magnesia product lines and customer relationships at the same time.
Going forward, QMAG’s R&D activities are set to concentrate on heat recovery, process efficiencies, renewable energy and greener fuels as well as ways to improve the efficiencies of our customers – all with the aim of continuing to provide quality magnesia products that make a sustainable difference to customers around the world.
Did you know?
We aren’t certain exactly how hot our electrofused magnesia becomes as we process it. Whilst we believe it is around 3,000 °C, there are no methods currently available that can reliably measure the temperature inside the ingots without melting. We simply know that the ingot is molten, and the melting point of MgO is 2,852 °C – so we know it’s more than that!
FEMAS certified for feed applications
To enable the supply of caustic calcined magnesia and magnesium carbonate (magnesite) for animal product applications, QMAG has held FEMAS (Feed Materials Assurance Scheme) certification since 2011.
FEMAS certification is mutually acknowledged alongside other globally recognised schemes such as GMP+ and FAMI-QS. Our FEMAS certification recognises a combination of good manufacturing practices and the food and feed safety considerations using Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HAACP) principles.
The internationally recognised FEMAS certification involves independent auditing to verify that our manufacturing and quality systems assure premium quality magnesia products for our global customers. This certification reflects QMAG’s commitment to quality and customer service.
ISO 9001 certified for a quality product
QMAG is currently certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2015.
QMAG first had its quality systems ISO-certified in 1993. Since this initial certification, QMAG has always maintained ISO Quality certification, demonstrating continued investment in the implementation and improvement of our Quality Management Systems.
BioGro certified for the organic input program for the agricultural industry
QMAG is currently certified in New Zealand under BioGro standards.
